The OBD-L Memory Saver adapter cable is a useful addition to the two Banner Power Boosters PB12 and PB12/24. In principle, it’s compatible with any power source (power supply unit) that has a cigarette lighter socket (12V DC).

OBD-2 (also called OBD2, OBD-II, OBD II or EOBD*) refers to the second-generation standardised on-board diagnostic system.

Mandatory in the European Union for all passenger cars with petrol engines from the first registration 01/01/2001 and for all diesel vehicles from 1/01/2004 .

*The EOBD is the European version of the American OBD-2. Although the term „EOBD“ is not an official term (the EU Directive only refers to OBD), most European vehicle manufacturers use the term EOBD to achieve a clear linguistic distinction from the US OBD-2.

News about the OBD interface! In the future, free access to vehicle data could become more difficult. This is because more and more car manufacturers are using encrypted interfaces that only allow very limited OBD access to some vehicles. IT specialists repeatedly succeed in hacking a car via the OBD interface (but also via infotainment systems, WLAN, Bluetooth, keyless systems, ...). This topic will be updated in due course.

Before changing the starter battery, always

Connect the OBD-L adapter cable to the power booster.

It’s easy via the 12V DC connection on the booster.

Banner tip: The round 12V socket (power outlet) is usually located at the front left in the upper area of the jump starter, possibly covered by a black protective cap.
Connect the power booster to the OBD socket using the OBD-L adapter cable and plug.

To save all vehicle settings and data.

The location of the OBD connection in a particular car, sometimes hidden by covers, can usually be quickly found in the owner's manual for the vehicle. Or through an online search of the internet.

There are also apps and online services that will hopefully provide the correct answer when you enter the make and model.

It is mandatory for the OBD interface to be located within one metre of the driver’s seat. Therefore, it is always placed in the passenger compartment, not in the engine or luggage compartment. It is often integrated into or under the dashboard on the driver’s side or near the centre console.

Banner tip! The OBD socket is usually fused for 10-20A, which means that when changing the battery while the voltage is being maintained, do not ‘play around’ with the car, for example by opening the boot or doors. This can quickly cause up to 40A of current to flow and the OBD fuse in the auxiliary circuit could blow!
Switch on the power booster

Now the voltage maintenance is activated and the battery can be changed.

Please note: The ignition of the car stays switched off, so there’s no need to start the engine!

After the battery has been replaced, switch off the booster, disconnect the OBD plug from the vehicle’s OBD port and disconnect the 12V DC connector from the booster.
