IMPULSECHARGE AND BATTERY PULSER

EXPLAINED BRIEFLY AND SIMPLY!

This technical term from charging technology sometimes leads to confusion because 2 completely different charging processes are associated with it.

Then there are the battery pulser fans! Time for sound information - short and simple.

1. Pulse charge to reactivate deeply discharged batteries.
A state of charge that should be avoided at all costs, e.g. due to the threat of sulphation if not immediately recharged.
With this pulse charge, deeply discharged 12V batteries are pre-charged to approx. 10.5V. During the reactivation phase, the charger works with a greatly reduced charging current of alternately approx. 0.07A and 0.8A. Then the battery is further charged to full capacity via the selected charging programme.

At Banner, this is referred to as Recovery or Refresh mode, e.g. in the chargers of the Accucharger series - Recovery and PRO.

2. Pulse charge to maintain the charge between approx. 95% and 100% state of charge (float charge).
The charger checks the battery voltage and delivers the so-called pulse charge if necessary.

Ideal for vehicles during longer idle periods or during winter storage.

What is the benefit of a battery pulser (desulphator)?

Banner does not recommend the use of pulsers for starter or vehicle electrical system batteries, especially as no significant positive effect on the service life or charging behaviour has been demonstrated in our own tests - either for new, sulphated or used batteries.

Ultimately, the question of the charging balance always arises with a starter or on-board power system battery. If, in the medium term, more energy is drawn from the battery than is recharged, this leads to a gradual decrease in the state of charge and, depending on the outside temperature, ultimately to starting problems or dead battery failure.

Please note: A pulser does not really help, as it does not supply any additional energy!

Instead, it sends high-frequency pulses into the battery, which should theoretically cause the sulphate crystals to break down.

Banner tip: Periodic external recharging of vehicle batteries that are mainly used for short trips or are operated irregularly during the season. It is best to at least always combine the recharging with the tyre change. With this measure, the service life of a battery can often be extremely extended.
Suitable chargers, such as the Banner Accucharger series with recovery or refresh function, are commercially available "only" at a slightly higher price than battery pulsers.
