WHAT IS A STARTER BATTERY?
A BATTERY FOR STARTING THE ENGINE.
The starter battery, often called a car battery or vehicle battery, is an accumulator and supplies the electrical current for starting the engine, for example in motor vehicles, emergency generators or aircraft turbines. Furthermore, to take over the power supply of a few additional electrical consumers in older vehicles - without start-stop function.
Once again: As the name suggests, a conventional starter battery is basically designed to provide a high, short burst of energy to start the vehicle. As soon as the engine is running, the vehicle's charging system ensures that the energy taken from the battery is recharged.
The starter battery performs various tasks in the vehicle:
- Even before the starting process, some components are supplied with voltage (injection system, various control units, pre-glow system, ignition coil, ...).
- The starter (starter motor) is supplied with the power required to start the engine.
- Power supply for a small number of electrical consumers such as lights, rear window heating, radio, clock, ...
- In the sports sector, the starter battery would be comparable to a sprinter, delivering full power over a comparatively short period of time.
